Adventures in Colour
Adventures in Colour were an early synthesiser band from Silvertown / Plumstead, east London formed in 1980 by Dave Fennessy and Lisa Trott. Influenced by post-punk bands such as Cabaret Voltaire, Human League, Gang of Four and Young Marble Giants. They were notable at the time as being the only synthesiser / drum machine based pop band playing primarily at Anarchist punk gigs alongside acts such as Rubella Ballet and Hagar The Womb.
Having managed to tag along with a friend to visit Crass at their Dial House commune with a demo tape they grabbed some early criticism, "We explained to Penny Rimbaud that we were a Left-wing synth band but with some songs about frozen insect drum kits as well as old ladies knees alongside songs about equal rights. He listened politely but never offered us a single on Crass records! He was and still is a wonderfully inspiring man but I don't think he liked synthesisers or our silly songs."
The band was swelled to a 4 piece in early 1982 by Morgan King on synthesiser and Gail Thibert on vocals. Morgan later went on to great success as a House music composer / producer and Gail joined The Lost Cherrees on synthesiser and vocals.
As a 4-piece they mostly played in and around south London usually under the Greenwich Performance Collective banner and also contributed a studio recorded track 'Cost of Living' to the first GPC compilation cassette. Venues included the 101 Club Clapham, Streets in Islington, Feltham Youth Club and Thames Poly Cellar Bar. "We were always quite surprised that we didn't get pelted off stage in front of all those hardcore punks in Crass t-shirts, I think they gave us a chance and accepted us for what we believed in rather than what we looked and sounded like." Their last gig was at The Tunnel Club in east Greenwich back as a duo using backing tapes and a hastily recruited vocalist, Janet Dodds. They disbanded shortly afterwards and subsequently recorded under the name SOUNDHOUSE for the second Greenwich Performance Collective compilation cassette, Here's The Shit.
